Fix Black Login screen in Windows 10

I recently wanted to deploy a custom login image for a bunch of Windows 10 machines using Group Policy Objects. The GPO I’d created was working fine on seven out of ten testlab-devices. The other three however only showed the following image.

What I’ve tried:

I tried really everything from setting the Performance Settings by GPO to testing different images and locations. Frustratingly enough nothing was able to resolve my issue permanently. Some people had recommended setting the “animating the windows while minimizing and maximising” Performance to Enabled. This resolved the issue indeed on one of my machines, but the other one still showed the black logon image.

How I fixed it permanently:

It took me until August this year to find the solution to my problem. For me KB4022723 resolved this issue. The reason why I didn’t instantly stumble across was that this update didn’t get installed automatically via the  Microsoft’s update center (it’s not a critical security patch). All you have to do is to install the patch on Windows 10 1607/Server 2016 and you’re good to go.

Cheers Alex
